SUMMIT FOR ERADICATING STREET BEGGING AMONG PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN NORTHERN NIGERIA
 The Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB) proposed a two-day summit, with the goal of “Eradicating Street begging among persons living with disabilities in Northern Nigeria”.
The summit would be attended by government officials, Disabled People’s Organizations (DPO), representatives of street beggars, community and religious leaders, the media and other interested parties with the purpose of formulating a problem-solving strategy.

 Discussions
  • Persons living with disabilities can earn income without having to beg
  • Persons with disabilities are not exposed to road accidents and other dangers
  • The disabled do not constitute security risks to their communities
  • Policies against street begging do not endanger the income of persons with disabilities
  • Relatives of disabled persons have time to utilize employment opportunities and fulfil their life ambitions
  • Persons with disabilities have capacity to be productive through education and vocational training
  • PWDs participate as respected members of the community
